UBS' Integration Journey: A Work in Progress
UBS' acquisition of Credit Suisse in March 2023 was a bold move, but the bank's CEO, Sergio Ermotti, admits it's still a work in progress. The integration process is on track to be largely completed by the end of the year, according to Ermotti and UBS' President, Colm Kelleher.
The first quarter saw UBS make significant strides, decommissioning 60% of outdated IT systems. This involved shutting down 76,000 servers out of 106,000 and deactivating 10 data centers out of 16. This aggressive approach is aimed at streamlining operations and reducing costs.
The cost-cutting measures are already paying off. UBS' expenses decreased by 10.7 billion dollars in 2025 compared to 2022. By the end of 2026, the bank expects to further reduce costs from 13 billion to 13.5 billion dollars. However, integration costs have risen to 15 billion, surpassing the initial estimate of 14 billion.
The integration process will lead to significant job cuts, particularly when Credit Suisse's legacy systems are phased out. UBS has already shed 1,250 jobs since September, with around 3,000 more expected in Switzerland. The focus will be on transforming the bank's global wealth management operations, with Switzerland remaining a key hub for this segment.
UBS is investing heavily in artificial intelligence (AI) to revolutionize its processes, enhance customer service, and boost operational resilience. Ermotti believes this will contribute to UBS' profitability returning to pre-integration levels by 2028. The bank's future hinges on successfully navigating this integration, leveraging AI to stay competitive in a rapidly evolving financial landscape.
