The SpongeBob Movie: Search for SquarePants Review – A Whimsical Adventure Worth the Wait

Could anyone have imagined that the giggling schoolchildren who enjoyed those early episodes of SpongeBob would see this quirky franchise thrive for an impressive 25 years, even after all sorts of unpredictable twists? This remarkable endurance can be attributed in part to its ability to entertain adults, including those now grown-up former students, alongside its primary young audience. While it may not feature a cameo as unexpected as David Hasselhoff’s appearance in the 2004 SpongeBob SquarePants Movie—a moment that remains delightfully bizarre—this latest installment does not shy away from creative surprises, including the familiar voice of Clancy Brown playfully taking on a pirate persona while interacting with iconic figures like Barbra Streisand and the band Yello. In Bikini Bottom, the possibilities are endless.

Kicking off with a festive short featuring Paramount's other beloved characters, the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles, the new SpongeBob film quickly falls into its signature silly rhythm. The screenplay presents a light-hearted PG-rated exploration of the ups and downs of growing up. Our hero, SpongeBob (voiced once again by Tom Kenny), is now taller at 36 clams, creating a buzz of excitement as he sets out to finally ride the rollercoaster of his dreams. One particularly amusing moment features our overly enthusiastic protagonist imagining wild loop-the-loops as he anticipates his adventure. However, what truly stands out in contemporary American animation is the intricate, twisty storyline that keeps audiences engaged. SpongeBob’s journey to earn a legendary swashbuckler certificate, which will validate his status as a “big guy,” brings him face-to-face with the Flying Dutchman, voiced by none other than the ever-popular Mark Hamill.

While the Dutchman's ship adds an element of grandeur, much of the film retains its whimsical charm through a delightful mix of digital animation and traditional hand-drawn elements, emphasizing vibrant, cartoonish visuals. In one hilarious scene, SpongeBob manages to squeeze himself into an air conditioning unit, only to emerge even squarer than before. There’s also a memorable cameo from a pair of talking joke-shop false teeth, and in a punishment that will resonate with kids, our hero finds himself stuck doing an endless pile of dishes. It’s uncertain whether the zany humor will stick in viewers' minds after leaving the theater, but this movie undoubtedly delivers a solid SpongeBob experience, arguably topping the list as the funniest Pirates of the Caribbean film, complete with a hearty Davy Jones joke and a cheeky catchphrase from SpongeBob’s friend Patrick: "The best guys are big guys." Those former students are sure to find themselves laughing once again.
