SpaceX has just launched a new crew to the International Space Station, replacing astronauts who had to return to Earth in NASA's first-ever medical evacuation. The four returning astronauts, including Meir, had to go straight to the hospital after their Pacific landing near San Diego. Dina Contella, deputy program manager, explained that with longer missions, NASA is constantly upgrading the space station's medical gear. "There are a lot of things that are just not practical, and that's when you need to bring astronauts home from space," she said.

They'll test a filter to turn drinking water into emergency IV fluid, use an ultrasound system with AI and augmented reality, and perform ultrasound scans on their jugular veins. The crew also includes Sophie Adenot, only the second French woman to launch to space, inspired by Claudie Haignere's mission to Russia's space station Mir in 1996. Haignere cheered Adenot on, wishing her "Bon vol" and "Ad astra."
Meir, who took part in the first all-female spacewalk in 2019, is excited about the future of space exploration. With the Artemis II mission waiting to fly around the moon, she said, "It's so cool to be an astronaut now, it's so exciting."
