Tennessee football just made history, and it’s all thanks to DeSean Bishop. This trio marks the first time Tennessee has seen three straight running backs surpass the 1,000-yard mark, though it’s worth noting that bowl game stats weren’t included in season totals until 2002. And this is the part most people miss: alongside Bishop’s achievement, wide receiver Chris Brazzell II also crossed the 1,000-yard receiving mark during the regular season, making 2025 the first year since 2007 that Tennessee produced both a 1,000-yard rusher and receiver in the same season.
Bishop’s journey to this milestone is nothing short of inspiring. After missing his entire freshman season in 2023 due to a preseason ankle injury, he returned in 2024 as Sampson’s primary backup, rushing for 455 yards and three touchdowns in 10 games. This season, he stepped into the starting role and flourished, growing stronger as the weeks progressed. His breakout moments came in October with back-to-back 100-yard performances against Arkansas and Alabama, followed by another 100-yard game in a thrilling win at Florida. Against Vanderbilt, he nearly hit the century mark again, rushing for 97 yards and two touchdowns—his fourth and fifth multi-touchdown games of the season.

Here’s where it gets controversial: while many celebrate his on-field achievements, Bishop himself emphasizes the off-field growth that’s been equally transformative. ‘Everybody sees what I’ve done on the field,’ he said. ‘But a lot of people don’t see what it took to get there—off the field, especially with my faith.
