The Tennessee Volunteers just snagged a commitment from Penn State safety transfer Dejuan Lane, a move that could significantly bolster their secondary. Lane primarily served as a backup safety for the Nittany Lions last season, but he did get the starting nod in three of twelve games. He logged 290 snaps and earned a solid 71.0 grade from Pro Football Focus (PFF). To put that in perspective, current Tennessee safeties Edrees Farooq earned a 69.1, Kaleb Beasley a 61.0, and Andre Turrentine a 59.3. This suggests Lane could be an immediate upgrade, or at least provide valuable competition for playing time. But here's where it gets controversial... The 6-foot-2, 212-pound Lane recorded 29 tackles and one sack during his sophomore campaign. In coverage, he was targeted 13 times, allowing 11 receptions for 139 yards and one touchdown. While the completion rate is a bit high, his size and physicality could be assets in run support. And this is the part most people miss: a single touchdown allowed doesn't tell the whole story. Lane was a highly touted four-star recruit coming out of high school in the 2024 class. Interestingly, he's currently unranked in the transfer portal by 247Sports.
