Colorectal cancer screening: A life-saving measure
Colorectal cancer is a silent killer, often developing without any noticeable symptoms in its early stages. This is why screening is crucial, and one man's story highlights the importance of early detection.
Mike Rawn, a 55-year-old commercial driver, had no idea that his routine physical exam would lead to a life-changing diagnosis. His doctor recommended a fecal immunochemical test (FIT) as part of his regular check-up, and Mike, feeling healthy and with no family history, initially dismissed it.
But the test results came back abnormal, prompting a colonoscopy. To his surprise, Mike was diagnosed with stage 3 colorectal cancer. He shares, 'I was shocked. I felt fine, had no symptoms, and the only reason it was detected was because of the FIT test.'
This experience led Mike to become an advocate for colorectal cancer screening. He emphasizes, 'You rarely feel cancer when it starts. The FIT test is a simple, non-invasive way to catch it early.'
Colorectal cancer often presents no symptoms, and when it does, they can be easily overlooked. Symptoms like changes in bowel habits, blood in the stool, abdominal discomfort, or unexplained weight loss might be attributed to other causes. Mike's story underscores the importance of proactive screening.
The FIT test, recommended every two years for those aged 50 to 74 through Ontario's ColonCancerCheck program, is a simple at-home test. It checks for tiny amounts of blood in the stool that the naked eye can't detect. Mike describes it as 'easy' and 'discreet,' emphasizing its effectiveness in early detection.
Despite the discomfort some may feel, Mike believes the FIT test is a small price to pay for potential life-saving benefits. He encourages everyone to take that first step, stating, 'It's a simple test that could save your life.'
Since sharing his story, Mike has inspired others to get tested, leading to early detections. He continues to give back to the community by serving on the Patient, Family, and Caregiver Advisory Committee at the Royal Victoria Regional Health Centre's Hudson Regional Cancer Centre.
Mike's message is clear: colorectal cancer screening is a vital tool in the fight against this disease. By catching it early, we can improve survival rates and quality of life. His story serves as a powerful reminder that sometimes, a simple test can make all the difference.
