"It's a belief system, and people are free to vote for it," Maher acknowledged. "But denying it won't help. Liberals need to face the truth if they want to win elections. America is not a communist country."
Maher's commentary highlights a growing concern among some Democrats: the risk of losing electoral support by embracing controversial ideologies. He believes that the party's current trajectory, which includes embracing democratic socialism, could lead to more defeats at the polls.
"The pendulum swings, but it rarely lands in the middle," Maher lamented. "Voters are often left with extreme choices, like crony capitalism or communism. It's a tough sell to choose between Trump family deals or a leader who openly talks about impoverishing the white middle class."
And this is the part most people miss: Weaver's controversial tweets, which were unearthed by internet sleuths, further fuel the fire. She has called for seizing private property, labeled homeownership as a tool of white supremacy, and advocated for impoverishing the white middle class.
Maher has been consistent in his criticism of Mamdani and democratic socialism, warning that the Democratic Party's embrace of these ideologies could be its downfall. He believes that Republicans will exploit this shift to their advantage.
"Zohran Mamdani is the future of the Democratic Party, but unfortunately, it's the Republican Party's future too. His victory speech will be used against Democrats for years to come," Maher joked.
Despite acknowledging Mamdani's likability, Maher urges caution, suggesting that the Democratic Party's enthusiasm for democratic socialist candidates could lead to a nationwide 'socialism fever'. He advises taking a cue from other successful candidates in recent special elections to avoid this potential pitfall.
