A bold vision for education is taking shape in Waterbeach New Town, Cambridgeshire, but it comes with a hefty price tag. The proposed primary school, Deneia Primary Academy, could cost up to a staggering £20 million to build!
This ambitious project aims to accommodate 630 pupils and meet the growing housing demand in the area, where approximately 6,000 new homes have been approved. However, the journey towards realizing this vision has been far from smooth.
In March 2024, construction work on the school was abruptly paused due to skyrocketing engineering and construction costs that far exceeded the initial project budget. But here's where it gets controversial... the Cambridgeshire County Council is now seeking approval for a new construction contract, with plans to restart work in April and aim for completion by July 2027.
The project has undergone a redesign, with Keir Construction taking on the task of building the school. Interestingly, the school will also offer 78 pre-school places and be managed by Anglian Learning. Councillors are being asked to approve some unique features, including a "bio solar green roof system" and the installation of sprinklers.
The report highlights the need for additional local reception places from September 2028, ensuring the building's completion before the school's official opening. This strategic move allows for flexibility, enabling the building to serve the community in various ways, from lettings and trust office use to potential community partnerships. And this is the part most people miss... the early years' facilities on-site are expected to be in high demand due to the expansion of government-funded childcare entitlements. Working families with children aged nine months and above can now access up to 30 hours of funded childcare, creating a significant demand for these facilities.
